- VoteFix - Usage Text ----------------------- Copyright Steve Mulligan 1993 -
I must give an extra special thanks to the TEST305 gang. They helped test
VoteFix and make this program what it is today.
- About This Document -
This is a user guide to VoteFix. This document does not describe how to
install or configure VoteFix. Instead, it allows people holding elections to
pass simple instructions along to their voters.
- What Is VoteFix? -
VoteFix is a program that allows people to hold elections by using simple
FidoNet type technology. It will count ballots and tally results for the
election coordinator. It makes elections accross a network mail system MUCH
easyer than recording results by hand.
- Talking To VoteFix -
To invoke VoteFix you must send a message to the person running it. The
message should be private (for security), addressed to VoteFix (ask your
election coodinator for the exact name as it is changable), and the
subject will be your password that can be anything you want (it is used to
show the tallied results and for resolving disputes). The election cordinator
does have the ability to change the name that VoteFix recognizes so ask him/
her first beforehand.

- Voting For Something -
Voting for something is easy; simply send a message to VoteFix with a list
of elections you want to vote in and the vote on the same line. Case does not
matter.

Computer IBM
---
Notice I put a tear line at the end of my message. That's the three dashes
on the line after "Computer IBM". This tells VoteFix that there is no more
information for it in this message. If I want, I may now write comments to
the election coordinator, or just notes to myself. It's a good idea to add
this tear line even if I have nothing more to say, in case some garbage gets
tacked on to the message during processing.
Be sure to vote carefully because if you try to vote twice, a flag that you
are cheating will be set and the election coordinator will want to have a few
words with you. If you mispell a vote, the election coordinator will probably
change it or ask you to re-vote.
- Options -
There are several useful options available. Each of these is invoked by
adding a command to your subject line after the password or right before the
election topic. Note that any of these options might be disabled by your
election coordinator.
If you use these options on the subject line, they must be preceded by a
space and a - (dash). Using the options on the subject line makes the effect
of that option global. If you use the options only on the election line in
the message, it is local to that election only. Options on the election line
will override options on the subject line.
NOTE: Any or all of these options can be turned off by the election
coordinator.
! Send back a tally of the results so far. If you use this, you only
have to write the election subject, you don't need to put the vote
but you can if you want.
@ Send back confirmation message showing VoteFix processed your vote.
# Send back confirmation message showing VoteFix processed your vote
and show who you voted for (The @ option doesn't show who you voted
for in case you want privacy).
$ Request vote info file on election. If the sysop has made a vote
info file for the election you have specified, then a message
containing this file will be returned. If you use this, you only
have to write the election subject, you don't need to put the vote
but you can if you want.
% Sends back valid candidate list. Can be placed on subject line of
message beside an election without a vote.
^ If placed on subject line, will send back a list of elcections that
system is running.

- Points And PointNets -
VoteFix is fully "point aware" in that it accepts and maintains information
in what we commonly refer to as "4D" addressing such as 1:270/101.88. This
4D operation is compatible with several FidoNet EchoMail processors. Some
others however are not yet able to accept 4D addresses. Those programs must
instead use pointnets or fakenets as some folks call them. As in all other
cases, please check with your election coordinator before locking in either 4D
or pointnet style addressing.
VoteFix allows points to be the election coordinator or points to vote in
the election. It's point friendly because it was written by a point.
- Acknowledgements -
Thanks to Greg Dawson for AreaFix. He gave me the idea for the name of
VoteFix (if you hadn't already guessed). Jeffrey J. Nonken & Ophiophile
Maximus for writing the AREAFIX.USE file which this file looks strangly
similar to. The Z1C Election of 93 that REALLY pissed me off so I got off my
butt and wrote this program.
